Integrated Modeling of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Systems: A PhD Position Summary

The government has set ambitious targets of 50GW offshore wind by 2030, including 5GW of floating offshore wind (FOW), and 100-140GW by 2050 as part of its Net Zero and Energy Security programs. Floating offshore wind still has a higher Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) than offshore wind with a solid basis. Because of the extreme conditions that floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are subjected to at sea, it is crucial that any excessive environmental pressures imposed by storms be accurately identified and quantified from the get-go.

Using Cutting-Edge High-Resolution Mineral mapping to look into hydrothermal systems on the seabed for a PhD job

The Earth’s system relies on global geochemical cycles, which determine when and where elements are recycled and in what quantities. Ocean chemistry and the effects of future climate change on the oceans are only two of the many scientific theories that can be traced back to these cycles. Seawater moves through the seafloor and back into the ocean through hydrothermal vents, contributing geochemical fluxes to the global geochemical cycles. Since the ocean crust retains evidence of this fluid/rock interaction, or “hydrothermal alteration,” we can use it to estimate the hydrothermal geochemical flux. However, time restrictions of mineralogical and geochemical research and insufficient core recovery from scientific ocean drilling hinder such investigations.

Lowland peat regenerative agriculture: a contradiction in terms?

The goals of the United Kingdom (UK) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero and to increase agricultural output in a sustainable manner both necessitate an in-depth understanding of GHG sources and sinks. UK food security depends on draining lowland peatlands, which are comprised of soggy, carbon-rich soils. However, the quality of peat is diminished as peatlands dry out. Undamaged peatlands release greenhouse gasses even if they store carbon over time. This research aims to shed light on the complex trade-offs involved in balancing food security with wetland management.

Position Summary/Title: Integrating Historical and Modern Ecology for Effective Fire Management in Britain’s Peatlands

Climate change is increasing the risk of wildfires occurring all over the world. Recent years have seen an increase in the frequency and severity of peatland wildfires in the United Kingdom.

  • Wildfires have the ability to severely damage peatlands, which are vital carbon-rich biodiverse ecosystems, and have a big detrimental impact on the environment.
  • However, peatlands’ potential to store carbon is diminished due to uncontrolled fires, which also destroy ecosystem function.
  • The findings of this study will inform efforts for controlling fires in peatlands and help mitigate their devastating effects. Long-term historical (paleo) knowledge about ecological changes in response to vegetation change, fire, and climate change will be merged with modern ecological studies.
