Financial Aid Scheme Number One:

  • You must both be a resident of and a citizen of a developing or growing nation in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or South America.
  • Possess a degree from an accredited university and relevant work experience in their native country.
  • Intent on spending between two and six months conducting research or studying at a German university (postdoc or PhD candidates).
  • Identify as Catholics or Christians more broadly, with a focus on those hailing from the Near and Middle East. If suggested by a Catholic partner and open to interfaith discourse, applicants of other faiths may be considered.
  • Learn German at a high level before applying. For qualified applicants, KAAD may pay for a six-month German language immersion programme in Germany.

Financial Aid Scheme Number Two:

  • Must be a native of an African, Asian, Middle Eastern, or Latin American developing or emerging nation.
  • You need to be a current German student with at least 10 months left of school.
  • Must intend to enrol in a university in Germany for the purpose of earning a Master’s, Diplom, or Magister degree, or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) (application possible in the last semesters of the Bachelor’s programme).
  • Must identify as Catholic or as a member of another Christian faith, with a focus on Near and Middle Eastern Christians. Applicants of other faiths will be considered for funding if they are nominated by Catholic partners and are open to interfaith dialogue.
  • Possess a functional level of German language skills at a minimum.

Initiatives in Eastern Europe:

  • Eligible countries include those in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
  • Catholic faith is required for applicants (in exceptional cases, applicants of another Christian denomination may be considered if they are proposed by Catholic partners).
  • As long as they match the other requirements, it doesn’t matter where a candidate is from geographically.
